This may be a longshot for me trying to keep this thing regularly updated, but I wanted to give an insight as to what exactly it is that I do with my artwork and my time at UC.
This is my most recent work from Autumn Quarter 2010.
The stacking of the clay slabs is based on cairns, or rock stacks found in nature. There are many stories of cairns from different areas of the world, but the one I found most intriguing is one in which hikers will take a rock from the bottom of the hill they are hiking, then when they come across a cairn they will drop their rock onto the stack and the cairn becomes a sort of "community" project created by hikers. The cairns usually take on a conical, or tension-y shape and that is what I tried to emulate with the clay slabs.
Pictures with glazes will come soon!
